World Water Week 2024

August 8, 2024

Join ZDHC and WWF as they co-present at World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden!

29th August 2024, 11 am CET:  True Colors - Wastewater and Pollution Solutions in Textiles

ZDHC and WWF are joining forces to talk about water in the fashion industry, focusing on everything from input chemistry to output pollution affecting waterways and the environment. Learn what can be done from the beginning to have a positive impact.

The importance of water in Fashion

Water is an integral part of life and is a vital resource in the fashion supply chain. As water availability and quality continue to decline, the increase in demand for water is likely to cause competition between production facilities, other sectors, communities, and nature.

Water-related risks to companies are compounded and continue to grow in significance and urgency. Industry leaders are taking meaningful steps through leadership and innovations to minimise the effects of shared water challenges and risks. However, pollution and wastewater from the fashion industry remain an issue.

Addressing Pollution and Wastewater

Pollution and wastewater are primarily by-products of ineffective or inefficient water resource use and production processes. Innovative solutions for cleaner production can lower water-related risks and increase economic, environmental, and social benefits.

NGOs and industry leaders have developed and employed place-based solutions to increase water use efficiency, reduce supply chain pollution and wastewater, collaborate to address shared water challenges and adopt technological advancements for cleaner production processes.

Understanding the complexities of water issues

The interconnections between  water issues reveal that water isn’t a singular issue, but instead a series of linked issues - across climate change, food security, and biodiversity, as well as spanning communities and across boundaries.

The session focus

The session will emphasise the need for improved production processes and awareness, accountability, and cooperation throughout the entire supply chain. We will share current wastewater and pollution interventions, programs, solutions, implementation opportunities, and challenges. The session aims to incentivize the adoption of innovative solutions to reach SDGs and water-related economic, environmental, and social benefits.
