On October 11th 2024, “Life Cascade” partners met in person to review the project developments and share their work programmes and achievements.
Università degli Studi dell’Insubria kindly hosted the event, providing an opportunity for all partners to see where some of the researchers work and to walk along the same waters being sampled for the project: Lake Como.
Here are some of the most important highlights of the event:
- Analysis of contamination levels of microplastics and ecotoxicity on two indicator organisms in the Lake Como basin and inflowing river water
- Assessment of a methodological pathway for microplastic analysis in complex matrices
- Characterization of textile finishing processes in Portuguese companies to identify sampling points of wastewater streams for microplastic analysis
- Observation of microplastic removal during lab-scale filtration under benchmark conditions
- Analysis of PFAS reduction in textile companies’ wastewater and exploration of effective processes for PFAS removal from contaminated water streams
- First data assessment on the characterization of wastewater from textile companies and specific process streams in terms of PFAS and fluorine content
- Completion of WWTP characterization campaigns for microplastics, PFAS, and fluorine, leading to the disclosure of valuable information and knowledge framework
- Review of the progress of the sampling campaign in five different textile companies and layouts for pilot plant installation at Bulgarograsso’s Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Review of project communication and engagement efforts (website, events, etc.)
- Evaluation of the determination of Total Organic Fluorine by Combustion IC as Adsorbable (AOF) in water and Total Fluorine (TF) in sludge samples
